Crisis pregnancy centers and the lies that endanger women’s health

Imagine that you think you might be pregnant and you don’t know what to do. You go to a place that offers free pregnancy testing, counseling and “abortion consultation.” Once you’re in a closed room with a “counselor” between you and the door, it turns out that the counseling is a barrage of lies and manipulation. If you get an abortion, they’ll “scrape out your uterus” and you might never be able to have children in the future. Your boyfriend will break up with you because you remind him of “something he’s not proud of.” You might even die, and no one would know what would happen to you and your death would go unrecorded.

All of this manipulative garbage and more was discovered through NARAL Pro-Choice California’s undercover investigation of anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers (full disclosure: I’m involved in this project). Crisis pregnancy centers are under the radar, but they’re a well-funded grassroots arms of the anti-choice movement that will say or do just about anything to keep a woman from having an abortion. They target women with false advertising so they can get them in the door and use their bizarre script to delay their access to legitimate medical care. Check out the findings at http://www.cpclies.com.

CPCs are slippery and we need to hold them accountable. The first step is exposing their deceptive practices.
