Wednesday watch: Phenomenal woman

The brilliant British singer/songwriter Laura Mvula released a new album this week. This video is for a song inspired by Maya Angelou’s famous poem. Julianne Escobedo Shepherd writes at Jezebel, “A salve against the bullshit (whatever you wanna define ‘bullshit’ as), ‘Phenomenal Woman’ was shot in the Bo-Kaap section of Cape Town, and features Mvula being just that, singing about being free in your womanhood and standing tall.” We could all use a salve against the bullshit right now, so enjoy the video, and be sure to check out the new album Dreaming Room and her previous record Sing to the Moon.
