Wednesday watch: Samantha Bee on Catholic hospitals

With reproductive rights under attack everywhere you turn, from Congress trying to defund Planned Parenthood to state legislatures mandating fetus funerals, there’s a stealth threat that hasn’t gotten as much attention but also poses a huge danger to women’s health. The ACLU reports that one in six hospitals beds in the US is now in a Catholic hospital that follows the church’s health directives, even when they threaten a woman’s life. Samantha Bee brings her perfect blend of humor and righteous indignation to the issue on this week’s episode of Full Frontal.

  1. No one cares about women’s health, we are apparently merely incubators. The thing that drives me crazy about abortion and Planned Parenthood is that why does the government and church feel like they have a say. You don’t always have to agree with something that someone does, but that doesn’t make it wrong. Planned Parenthood also does more than abortions, they saves lives, but for some reason some folk don’t want to acknowledge that. Anyway, great post!

  2. What right does an unqualified mediocre hack comedian have to impugn someone whose work is actually challenging abuse of power and authoritarianism, as opposed to regurgitating the bile of a coterie of feminist writers, who favour the imperial rule of “Madame Wikileaks”, and obviously decry an organisation that has revealed so much about the Clinton Foundation’s “pay for play” nepotism and malfeasance?

Bee first attacked WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, calling him a “heroic transparency fetishist who refuses to tell Swedish authorities whether or not he raped someone.”

The Australian national claims he refused to travel to Sweden for questioning because he feared extradition to the US over WikiLeaks’ release of 500,000 secret military files on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mr. Assange’s encounter was with Anna Ardin—an ardent feminist, Social Democrat, Christian, animal rights activist, pro-lifer and scholar on Latin America. Ms. Ardin described herself online as somebody who, somewhat alarmingly, “burns for justice, solidarity and equality,” and she once wrote a paper on “The 7 Steps To Revenge,” against men who “dump you.”
Sweden is said by some critics to be a bastion of feminist extremism, with ever expanding “rape” laws, which have caused Sweden’s reported rape rates to increase by 170 percent since 2004 when the laws were expanded. Sweden reports more rapes than any country in Europe.

Journalist Johann Wahlstrom’s comments in the police report that Mr. Assange was a “total magnet” for women, saying they “just glued themselves to him.” He describes Mr. Assange as gentlemanly, distracted and consumed with his political thoughts and discussions. “Women,” Mr. Wahlstrom said, “so many of them, they did everything they could to wind up in bed with him.”

The reason Ms. Wilen was upset was not that Mr. Assange forced the sex—it was that he managed to get her to have sex without an intact condom. A careful analysis by Swedish judicial writer Marten Schultz, writing in a magazine called NEO, clarified that as draconian as Swedish rape laws are, it is not rape, even in Sweden, to remove a condom, or even to break a condom during the act.

Julian Assange will be questioned next week in the Ecuadorian embassy in London over an allegation of rape, Sweden’s public prosecutor’s office has confirmed.

The WikiLeaks founder, who has been holed up in the embassy since 2012, welcomed the news through his lawyer, saying he was looking forward to the “chance to clear his name”.
“We have requested this interview repeatedly since 2010,” his lawyer, Per Samuelsson, said. “Julian Assange has always wanted to tell his version to the Swedish police. He wants a chance to clear his name. We hope the investigation will be closed then.”

The reality that Bee’s show is a comedy, not news, seems lost on Salon, The Huffington Post, Vox, New York magazine, or any of the other sites that picked up the story. Furthermore, the assertions made by Bee are factually wrong and indicate a complete disregard for truthful reporting.

  3. Bee’s assertions are disproved by simply examining the number of pro-life organizations who are not affiliated with evangelicals or the Republican Party. Feminists for Life, Democrats for Life, and the Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians to just name a few. The very existence of these organizations indicates that the issue of life crosses religious and ideological lines. After all, everyone has an interest in protecting the defenseless.
Ultimately, you won’t see Samantha Bee talk about how few Americans support unrestricted abortion. You won’t find her comparing our abortion laws to North Korea’s. You won’t see her interview representatives from Feminists for Life to learn why many of the leaders in the feminism movement were pro-life because that would threaten her narrative.
Samantha prefers to live in the alternate universe where all Americans support abortion on demand, where pro-lifers are crazy Republican fundamentalists who hate women, and where unborn children are universally refused rights. If embracing falsehood in the name of comedy is her gig, so be it. But if publications claiming some vestige of credibility continue to endorse her routines as fact, then the joke is on them.
